Seniors
Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people 65 years of age or older. It pays for much of your health care, but not all of it, such costs could be, prescription drugs, deductibles, and coinsurance.
Understand the Medicare Basics
The better you understand Medicare and how it works, the better prepared you'll be to choose the plan that's right for you.
Medicare has four parts - A, B, C, and D
- Part A (Hospital Insurance)
- Part B (Medical Insurance) that covers doctor visits and outpatient care
- Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans) are available from private insurers contracted with Medicare. You are eligible to enroll in an advantage plan if you have Medicare Parts A and B
- Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage) is only available from private insurers through contracts with Medicare.
Your First Medicare Enrollment Period
If you are approaching age 65, you have a 7 month window to enroll in a Medicare Advantage or prescription drug plan. This window consists of the three months before your 65th birthday, the month of your 65th birthday, and the three months after your 65th birthday.
If you are employed and plan to continue working after your 65th birthday, talk with your company's benefit administrator. Find out how your current health plan differs from or works with Medicare.
If you are not 65 but you are disabled, you are eligible for Medicare after you have received disability benefits from Social Security for at least 24 months.
People who become newly entitled to Medicare should enroll during their initial enrollment period, as they turn 65. You can also enroll during the annual enrollment period (for 2012) from October 15, through December 7, each year.
January 1st through February 14th, the Medicare Annual Disenrollment Period.
You can disenroll from a Medicare Advantage plan and return to original Medicare and select a stand-alone Prescription drug plan and obtain a medicare supplement plan.

Every client has different needs. Many times the choice between selecting an Advantage Plan versus a Supplement plan comes down to which plan is more affordable. A supplement plan has higher monthly premium cost with little or no out-of-pocket cost at time of claim. An Advantage plan offers premium savings now with higher out-of-pocket cost (deductibles, copays and coinsurance) when medical services are needed.
